The honest guide to making your blonde last, from the salon that does it every day
So you just went blonder. Maybe it’s your first time. Maybe you finally booked the full transformation you’ve been pinning for months. Either way, you walked out of the salon feeling like the best version of yourself, and now you want to keep it that way.
I’m Emily, owner of A Perfect Hue in Las Vegas, and this is the exact maintenance guide we hand to our blondes when they leave the salon. Living in the desert with our hard water, intense sun, and chlorinated pools is genuinely hard on lightened hair, so the routine you follow at home matters just as much as the work we do in the chair. Here is everything you need to know to keep your color bright, your tone clean, and your hair feeling healthy between visits.
Lightened hair is always more porous than virgin hair, especially in the first few weeks after a service. The lightening process opens the cuticle to remove pigment, which is what gives us the bright, beautiful blonde we love, but it also leaves the hair more vulnerable to dryness, breakage, and color fade. The good news is that the right products and habits can fully protect your investment. The not so good news is that your old shampoo from the drugstore probably isn’t going to cut it anymore.
This is the rule I repeat the most. Wait at least 48 hours before your first wash after a color service. Your cuticle is still settling, your toner is still locking in, and washing too soon is one of the fastest ways to undo the work we just did. After that, the goal is to wash as little as possible, no more than two to three times per week for most people. Stretching your wash days is one of the single best things you can do for your blonde.
Water temperature matters more than people realize. Lukewarm to cool is the sweet spot, and the cooler the better. Hot water opens the cuticle and lets your color molecules wash right down the drain, which is the opposite of what we want. Use a sulfate free shampoo every time, condition from the mid lengths to the ends, and detangle gently with a wide tooth comb in the shower. Lightened hair is at its weakest when wet, so this is not the moment for aggressive brushing.
Not every wash day looks the same, and your routine should flex with your week. Here are the three I recommend to my blondes, depending on what your hair needs that day.
Sample Day A, your standard wash day:
Sample Day B, when your hair is thirsty or feeling rough:
Sample Day C, after the pool or when buildup is heavy:
Purple shampoo is one of the most misused products in blonde haircare, and it’s the reason so many of my new clients come in with hair that looks dull, ashy, or even slightly purple at the roots. Here is the truth. Wait at least one month after your color service before you reach for purple shampoo at all. After that, use it no more than once per week, and honestly, every ten days or longer is even better. Purple shampoo is a tool, not a daily product. Used too often, it builds up and dulls your blonde instead of brightening it.
Our climate is brutal on blonde. The Las Vegas sun fades color faster than most people realize, and the chlorine in our pools can pull warm or even green tones into lightened hair. Three habits will save you. First, always apply a multi benefit spray or heat protectant before going outside or getting in the water, because most of these sprays double as UV protection. Second, keep your hot tools at 350 degrees or lower, because anything hotter is causing damage you can feel and see. Third, when you’re at the pool or in the sun for long stretches, wear a hat or pull your hair up and protect it physically. Your future self will thank you.
Color is only half of the equation. The other half is keeping the hair itself in good shape so your blonde keeps looking the way it did the day you left the salon. Here is the schedule I follow with my own clients.
I tell every new blonde the same thing in the chair, so I’m going to tell you here too. Lightened hair is always weaker than virgin hair, especially right after the service. That doesn’t mean it’s damaged, and it doesn’t mean you can’t have the blonde of your dreams. It just means you have to treat it like the investment it is. Detangle gently, style minimally on your in between days, sleep on a silk pillowcase or wrap your hair up at night, and don’t skip the leave in. The clients who follow this advice are the ones whose blonde looks stunning months down the road.
